Rajesh Devraj, Duncan Paul Directors - Art of Bollywood

Пр-во:

Mother India goes to the movies Hand-painted movie posters that made Bollywood a winner Since its inception in the second decade of the 20th century, the Bombay-based Indian film industry-Bollywood-has developed a unique visual language, articulated by the vivid hand-painted movie posters that have since become highly-desirable collectors' items. While Bollywood poster artists produced a staggering number of these hand-painted images, their ephemeral work has traditionally been presented unevenly, with shoddy reprints and re-release posters. The Art of Bollywood digs deeper into the tradition, presenting the original art in its true glory-from seldom-seen posters to rare images of street publicity and cinema displays. The text provides a detailed discussion of the works of key artists, in this comprehensive overview of a previously neglected and underrated artistic genre. About the editor: Paul Duncan has edited 50 film books for TASCHEN, including the award-winning The Ingmar Bergman Archives, and authored Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick in the Film Series. About the authors: Edo Bouman is a researcher and collector of Indian film posters and Indian film music, and runs the Amsterdam-based record label Bombay Connection, which specializes in South Asian film scores and soundtracks. Rajesh Devraj is a writer and filmmaker based in Mumbai, India. He has worked in advertising and television, and is the author of several screenplays.

King David Russian Revolutionary Posters

King David Russian Revolutionary Posters

Пр-во:

Russian Revolutionary Posters tells the story of the development of the Soviet poster, from the revolutionary period through to the death of Stalin, revealing the way in which tumultuous events within the Soviet Union were matched by equally dramatic shifts in graphic art and design. Written and designed by David King, one of the world's foremost experts on Soviet art and himself an internationally acclaimed graphic designer, the publication features posters drawn from his unparalleled collection, well known to visitors to Tate Modern in London. The book is arranged chronologically. Captions accompany each poster, explaining the historical and artistic context in which it was produced. Constructivist posters, socialist advertising, film posters of the 1920s, classic photomontage, the heroic posters of the Great Patriotic War, biting political satire and the cult of personality of the Stalin years are all here. The great names of Soviet poster design, including Alexander Rodchenko, El Lissitsky, Gustav Klutsis, Dimitri Moor, Viktor Demi and Nina Vatolina, all feature. However, some of the most arresting posters reproduced were created anonymously or by scarcely known artists whose work will be a revelation to many. King takes us behind the scenes, explaining the process involved in the commissioning of the posters and the key figures who coordinated poster campaigns, providing personal histories of the art directors and creative directors whose vision played such a vital role in soviet poster design. With an insightful introduction and over 165 images, some of which have never been seen before, this beautifully produced book will be the definitive survey of the subject for many years to come.

Salter Colin 100 Posters That Changed The World

Salter Colin 100 Posters That Changed The World

Пр-во:

Classic posters from the last 300 years and the stories behind them. Posters have always been designed to seek an immediate response. From the time when paper was first affordable, the poster has been used to provoke a direct reaction, whether a public appeal, a legal threat, a call to arms, or the offer of entertainment. Newspapers might have the advantage of ubiquity in spreading the word, but a poster could be tightly targeted by its location. Organised chronologically, 100 Posters That Changed the World charts the history of poster design from their earliest forms as a means of information communication to the more subtle visual communication of the 21st century. As printing became cheaper, posters were used for more than just promoting the capture of local villains or announcing government decrees. Advertisements took over, citing up-and-coming events, auctions, public meetings, political rallies, sports games, lectures and theatrical performances. The technological leaps from engraving to aquatints to lithography, chromolithography and the offset press, all had their impact on what could be advertised by poster, and the art form took off spectacularly in the late 19th century with the influence of Lautrec and the Paris nightclubs. From then on, the poster became a sophisticated means of visual communication. In the West it was used to sell products - in the East it was used to sell regimes and control behaviour. Along with historic moments in poster evolution, 100 Posters That Changed the World charts the most impactful designs of the last 300 years - images that communicate a message whether commercial or political, images that sell a film, a musical, a cause or used for decoration, inspiration, motivation and affirmation. The affirmation for teenagers in the 1970s that Farah Fawcett was looking at you.

Openness and Idealism. Soviet Posters. 1985–1991

Openness and Idealism. Soviet Posters. 1985–1991

Пр-во:

A revelatory compendium on the reinvention of Soviet poster art under Glasnost As we approach the 30th anniversary of the dissolution of the USSR, this publication looks back at the rich history of Soviet art from the USSR’s final chapter: the colorful and radical posters of Glasnost. Ushered in by Mikhail Gorbachev, Glasnost (translating as “openness” or “transparency”) was a movement that allowed for artistic and open-minded alternatives to the state-endorsed Social Realism. Within this movement, posters became the primary vehicles for confronting the history of the USSR from the vantage of its impending dissolution. The book features approximately 212 reproductions of posters from the Martha H. and J. Speed Carroll Collection, as well as essays by Russian history scholar Andy Willimott and art historian Pepe Karmel, and an introduction by J. Speed Carroll. Also included are three interviews with Russian artists who produced some of the posters pictured, conducted by Russian translator Bela Shayevich.

Film Posters of the 90s: The Essential Movies of the Decade

Film Posters of the 90s: The Essential Movies of the Decade

Пр-во:

Whatever your taste in movies, the filmmakers of the 1990s had it covered. On the one hand, the big studios took advantage of the ever-increasing sophistication of computer-generated imagery to produce spectacular, mega-budget "event" movies like "Titanic", "The Matrix" and "Mission: Impossible"; on the other, a new generation of independents like Tarantino and the Coen Brothers was winning its spurs with low-tech and often low-budget productions such as "Reservoir Dogs" and "The Big Lebowski". Spielberg turned his attention to the Second World War with "Saving Private Ryan", Eastwood and Costner gave the Western a new lease of life with "Unforgiven" and "Dances With Wolves", and the Brits chipped in with two unexpected successes, "The Full Monty" and "Trainspotting". From the eerie psychosis of "The Silence of the Lambs" to the romantic fantasy "Pretty Woman", this was a decade that offered something for everyone. Hollywood may have become besotted by all things digital, but print on paper, in the form of the poster, remained one of the most important means of promoting movies of all kinds, and the poster artists of the 90s proved that they could still produce striking and alluring images. This book reproduces the pick of the decade. Книга на английском языке.

Film posters of the 30s. The Essential Movies of the Decade

Film posters of the 30s. The Essential Movies of the Decade

Пр-во:

Nourmand, who owns London`s Reel Poster Gallery, and Marsh, a designer and art director, have compiled a lovely array of posters from movies of the 1930s. Among the book`s treasures are full-page reproductions of the poster for the French Wizard of Oz, with a gallant Dorothy strutting toward the Emerald City with her cartoonish sidekicks behind her; the Marx Brothers" Duck Soup, done in an abstract wash of color, with Groucho`s signature cigar clearly visible; and It Happened One Night, which shows Clark Gable gazing longingly at the stunning Claudette Colbert. An introductory essay serves as the book`s only text; after that, Nourmand and Marsh organize the posters loosely by genre: romance, adventure, comedy, war. Although the book lacks a table of contents, a rear index lists the 110 films alphabetically.

Film Posters of the 40s: The Essential Movies of the Decade

Film Posters of the 40s: The Essential Movies of the Decade

Пр-во:

Lights down, curtain up on the cinema of the 1940s, a decade that produced some of the most critically acclaimed movies of all time. These range from the iconic "Casablanca", starring a cynical, world-weary Humphrey Bogart and a never-more-beautiful Ingrid Bergman, to Orson Welles' seminal "Citizen Kane", and from the optimistic "It's a Wonderful Life" to the enigmatic "The Third Man", recently voted best British film of all time by the critics. This was the decade when Hollywood introduced cinema audiences to one of the greatest of all genres the film noir, still epitomised by movies like "Double Indemnity". "Out of the Past", "Gilda" and "The Maltese Falcon" - a darkly sinister world of gumshoes, double-crossing dames, bent cops and blind alleys. The world may have been at war for the first half of the decade and Europe in ruins for the second, but this was, in many ways, a golden age of cinema. Moreover, as this book shows, the passage of time has not diminished the impact of the 40s poster art that had contemporary audiences queuing to see the latest releases starring movie immortals like Robert Mitchum and Rita Hayworth. Film Posters of the 70s: The Essential Movies of the Decade

Film Posters of the 70s: The Essential Movies of the Decade

Пр-во:

The cinema of the 1970s reflected both the anxieties and the escapism of an angst-ridden decade. The bleak realism of "Taxi Driver" and the political paranoia of "All the President's Men" co-existed with the androgynous fantasy of "Rocky Horror Picture Show". In the 70s, "blaxploitation" made its first appearance; "Last Tango in Paris" and "Emmanuelle" edged "porno-chic" into the mainstream; "ethno-сооl" reached new heights in "The Godfather". Clint Eastwood traded his poncho for a 44 Magnum in "Dirty Harry"; "Star Wars" blasted audiences into hyperspace; "Jaws" hit the New England beaches and "Apocalypse Now" did for Huey helicopters what "Saturday Night Feve" did for white suits and flares. The images in this book represent the full range of poster art which attracted world-wide cinema audiences to these and many other movies and reveals just how much current fashion owes to the style of the 70s.
