Pour Chaim Soutine (1893-1943), peindre est un besoin existentiel, qui prime sur tout. Soutine a grandi dans la pauvrete au sein d'une famille juive de Bielorussie, dont il est le dixieme enfant. Ce n'est que vers 1913 qu'il emigre en France. Il s’installe a la Ruche, cite d’artistes accueillant des etrangers, vit dans la boheme de Montparnasse et etudie aux Beaux Arts de Paris. Souvent decrit comme timide et introverti, Soutine n'a eu de cesse de projeter ses angoisses et incertitudes dans ses oeuvres. S'il a ete rattache a l'Ecole de Paris aux cotes de Chagall et Modigliani, Soutine s'est inspire des grands maitres comme Rembrandt, avec son Boeuf ecorche qui revisite le theme de l’ecorche et de la carcasse animale dans un style morbide qui trouve un echo important dans une epoque marquee au fer rouge par la Premiere Guerre mondiale. Soutine s'est ainsi essentiellement essaye a la nature morte, au portrait ainsi qu'a la peinture de paysage. Parmi ses oeuvres les plus connues, Le Petit Patissier qui l'a fait connaitre de Paul Guillaume, marchand de son ami Modigliani, ou des oeuvres comme Self Portrait ou Paysage de Cagnes. Ses couleurs flamboyantes apposees au couteau, ses perspectives distordues et ses portraits deformes creent une ambiance dramatique et deconcertante, qui n'a touche qu'une poignee d'inities avant que la puissance de son art ne soit revelee par Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock ou Francis Bacon, heritiers de son expressionnisme tourmente.
